The C60/C45 hollow linear shaft is required for any applications that require linear shafts which are of a low weight or if the ability to pass something through the shaft is required, without compromising strength or mechanical properties, such as air, fluid or cables.
The C60/C45 Induction Hardened Linear Shaft, known by the code WH is usually stocked in metric diameters from 12mm to 50mm, but if a larger diameter is required then this can be obtained on request by contacting us. The quick comparison below shows the differences in weight between a solid and a hollow linear shaft, which provides a sense of why hollow shafts are popular when reducing weight is a key priority.
50mm Solid Linear Shaft – 15.40kg/m – 50mm Hollow Shaft – 9.91kg/m
30mm Solid Linear Shaft – 7.55kg/m – 30mm Hollow Shaft – 3.50kg/m
Our induction hardened linear shafts present a soft shaft core to ensure good resilience. Though at first glance all of our linear shafts may appear the same as other shafts, there are key metallurgical differences which need to be noted.
Some of the performance differences between linear shafts and other steel bars arise during the manufacturing process. Induction hardening is the name given to this process, which involves induction heating, followed by quenching, where the linear shafts are heated up and then rapidly cooled down. This process results in increasing the hardness of the linear shafts but also the brittleness of them. Therefore, subsequent machining operations and processes done on the linear shafts, such as cutting the bar when breaking through this “induction hardened skin”, radial and axial drilling and tapping and milled flats, all require an engineer with considerable knowledge and experience.
Furthermore, the linear inner race demands the highest levels of surface hardening, topography and finish as well as diameter, taper and roundness, and material cleanliness and straightness, to provide optimum performance with minimal wear and maintenance. All of these factors are important to ensure that your linear shafts last the length of time required for the application they are needed for.
Our linear shafts can be supplied for a wide variety of different applications, from piston rods in pneumatic machinery for various industries including packaging, food and printing, through to press toolmaking, CNC Machinery, power transmission and hydraulic applications.
There is no end to the applications for the linear shafts we supply
